Beauty?

Janet had a great post on her blog about Dove's "Campaign for Real Beauty" and I wanted to add to that as well. My husband found this Dove video a few weeks ago online and showed me. We showed it to our girls too. It goes to show how distorted the image of "BEAUTY" can be presented to us by the media. It made me cry!

Wow!

The media has made it very difficult for most of us to feel comfortable in our own skin. Distorting beauty in this way makes most of us simply feel inadequate, doesn't it?

p.s. I admire Dove for putting this in perspective for young women.

I can't believe that they actually lengthen HER NECK, change her bone structure, arch her eyebrows, unbelievable! I hate that we feel inadequate to a perfect standard that ISN'T EVEN REAL! Thanks for posting that, Elise. I'll let my kids have a peek too!

Wow! That is amazing. I knew there was airbrushing, but I had no idea there was figure alteration! YIKES!! I thought just the hair and make-up was an amazing change, she is a beautiful girl already.

I am going to check out the Dove campaign.

Thanks for sharing.

What a powerful video. Having worked in the fashion industry I know all about this - I used to go to photoshoots and I was always amazed at that the end result looked nothing like the live version I saw. I remember once, a model was in an awkward position that was creating a "fold" in her belly (and she was very thin) the cameraman kept saying "suck in your gut" to which she replied; "why should I - you're just going to airbrush it out anyways".
Thank goodnees I am no longer in that industry!
Every 13 year old girl should see this!! It sure would have helped me at that age! Good job Dove!

Elise,

I was traveling when the Today show aired a segment on the Dove commercial and unfortunately I am so TIVO oriented that I did not pay attention and only caught it out of the corner of my eye. I then realized I did not have my TIVO in the hotel room and was mad I had missed it. Thanks for finding it on You Tube. I think it is critical that all our girls and young women see this so they know not to compare real beauty with print beauty.
